Holiday Hussle

I find it slightly ironic that one of my favorite times of the year can also be one of the most exasperating. Amidst all the festivities, the lights, the smiles, and reunions, there is also all the frantic running about and stress of finding time to do all the extra holiday traditions and chores. In the end it becomes a struggle to balance the joy of the holidays with the great deal of anxiety to create the moments we cherish. Whichever way we land on though, it certainly leads to some great inspiration. So lets see some great holiday poetry!

Warm Colors, Warm Feelings

Some of my best memories always come from around this time in the year. I find myself taking trips up to see relatives on the old family farm and celebrating the season with loved ones. There are the sites of brightly colored trees, pumpkins and candles on the steps and in the windows, fresh green boughs placed under all the windows by my mother. Of course there are also the wonderful smells of wood burning in the fireplace, and Thanksgiving dinner cooking in the kitchen. It’s this time of year that I try to take time out from my hectic life and spend it with loved ones and really enjoy their company. I suppose thats what brings me to an interesting point. Usually when we think of a love poem, we think of romance, passion, and desire, but there are so many other loves in our lives that we can be writing about as well. There are friends, family, pets, even seasons that can bring out our love. My challenge for everyone today is to check out the huge Love Poem section at Poetry.com and write back with a whole new take on the classic love poem. Let me hear some seasonal thoughts too (as you can tell, I’m a big fan of fall).

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween everyone! I’ve always enjoyed this holiday as a way to really embrace the fall weather, the new scenery, and all the great seasonal dishes my favorite restaurants have to offer. I come from a big family and this was always a day to get everyone together at my grandmothers house for games, food, and merriment . Now that I am grown and a little bit farther away from being able to go over the bridge and through the woods to grandmother’s house, how about everyone send me some of there very best Halloween inspired poetry? It’ll certainly put me in the right mood for the season.

Embracing Autumn

As I drove to work today, I was caught off guard at how suddenly the leaves had started to change. It seems as if in less than a day I was now being greeted by brilliant oranges and reds that used to be bright green. With that in mind, I would love to read some poems about autumn gracefully making it’s way into our lives. Let’s hear what everyone has to say.

Branching Out

I am excited to say that because of the overwhelming interest in this blog, I have begun work on expanding the breadth and scope of The Official Poetry Blog. If all goes well, we will soon be offering fans the ability to submit posts to this blog as well! Hopefully I will be able to have more information in the next few days as well as plans for when this will happen. Our Favorite Poets

As we are seeing, people seem to draw their inspiration from many different places, people, and things in their lives when they put pen to paper (or hands to keyboard for that matter). For me, my family and friends have always been a constant source of inspiration in my writing. Beyond the here and now though, I find that a great deal of my creativity has been inspired by reading the works of others and learning how they approached the world. Many great poets had unique ideas, minds, and perspectives which allowed them to create powerful pieces. What caused me to think about them today was ironicly a really interesting quiz I was taking on Poetry.com. It had a lot of really thought provoking questions about famous poets that I had never really considered before. In fact, the most fun part about the quiz was jumping all around the website looking to find the answers so I could learn even more. Poetry Challenge – Haiku

One of the Japanese forms of poetry, the haiku is a short poem of three lines using five syllables in the first, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third line. It does not rhyme and is nature oriented.

Write a haiku about something in nature (i.e. animal, plant, weather, etc.), but do not mention the name of the subject. For example:

Small gray and furry

Quickly leaping from tree limbs

Burying dinner
